Este artigo examina a relação entre órgãos de Segurança Pública e a pesquisa científica, destacando os paradigmas da pesquisa engajada, do Problem-Oriented Policing e do Evidence-Based Policing, como marcos fundamentais dessa aproximação. Em um momento inicial, a partir de revisão teórica e de experiências internacionais, como o College of Policing, o Chicago Crime Lab e o Cambridge Centre for Evidence-Based Policing, é lançado um pano de fundo propício a viabilizar a superação do “diálogo de surdos” existente entre órgãos policiais e universidade. Em um segundo momento, no contexto brasileiro, realiza-se um relato do convênio FGVAnalytics e da Assessoria de Estudos e Pesquisas em Segurança Pública (ASSESP/ SSP-SP), que exemplificam arranjos institucionais inovadores na integração entre pesquisa aplicada e formulação de políticas públicas de segurança. Propõe-se a transição da pesquisa sobre a polícia para a pesquisa com a polícia, valorizando tanto os “pracadêmicos”, como a produção de conhecimento orientado a problemas. Conclui-se que parcerias colaborativas, fundamentadas em rigor metodológico e experiência profissional, são essenciais para ampliar a efetividade, a eficiência e a equidade na segurança pública.
