INVENTORY OF CRIME PREVENTION STRATEGIES BY ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) FOR PUBLIC SPACES

This study aimed to elaborate an instrument for post-occupancy evaluation on regards to factors that influences criminal behaviors and fear of crime in public spaces. The instrument is based on a systematic review of the crime prevention through environmental design bibliographic; and search for elements that identify environmental features related to crime actual or perceived. The elaborated itens was analysed by specialized judges in architecture, law, public security and psychology. In search for validity and reliability, the inventory was tested in 10 public places in the Federal District for 24 for trained participants. From psychometrics criteria resulted a 58 itens instrument categorized in 7 dimensions: Lightning, Space Maintenance, Wayfinding, Natural Surveillance, Territoriality, Geographic Juxtaposition, and Emergence and Accidents. This instrument revealed to be able to facilitate analyses and interventions in both safe and unsafe places, what are able to contribute to: community mental and physical health; economic development; public spending on crime and fear of crime.
