Challenges of Judicial Activity in the Brazilian Legal Amazon Region

This article analyzes the need to understand the socioeconomic context surrounding environmental crimes in the Brazilian Legal Amazon to ensure effective judicial action that imposes fair penalties and environmental reparations. It emphasizes the importance of using both quantitative and qualitative data, which have proven essential in identifying the operational methods of criminal organizations involved in the illegal extraction of natural resources. The article highlights the importance of understanding the economic chain that enables the laundering of illegally obtained resources. It argues for the need to weigh the economic gains derived from environmental crimes as a means of fostering investigations that target not only the direct deforesters or polluters but also the masterminds and financiers behind these crimes. The article underscores tools and methods for identifying such crimes, such as remote sensing, and discusses investigative approaches to trace money laundering flows.
